According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”
