Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
